He didn't/couldn't/wasn't able to see/realize/understand the danger/risk/peril he was in. As he reached/got to/climbed up to the top, the branch/limb/twig broke/snapped/fell. Sam plummeted/fell/crashed to the ground with a loud/sharp/painful thud/sound/crash.

His New Friend

Sam was having a little lonely. He hoped to have a new friend to play with. One day, while he was playing in the woods, he noticed something interesting. It was a little being with glowing feathers. Sam quietly walked over to the creature and spoke, "Hello! What's your identity?" The creature smiled and replied Sam, "You can call me Lily!" And so, Sam made a new mate. They spent the rest of the day talking together.

Sam was so happy to have found a new friend. He knew that he and Lily would be great pals forever.
